The NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course is a comprehensive, instructor-led program designed to teach students safe rifle handling, proper operation, and fundamental marksmanship skills. This single-day course combines structured classroom instruction with hands-on, live-fire training on the range.
Students will learn NRA’s core gun safety rules; rifle parts and operation; ammunition knowledge and selection; rifle selection and safe storage; shooting fundamentals; and range safety procedures. Practical instruction includes shooting from multiple positions—bench rest, prone, sitting, standing, and kneeling—as well as rifle inspection, cleaning, and continued skill development. Students are expected to bring a positive attitude and a willingness to learn; all necessary skills and techniques for success will be taught during the course.
The live-fire portion is conducted on an outdoor range, rain or shine, under the direct supervision of an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor. During range time, students will complete a nationally standardized marksmanship qualification, reinforcing safe gun handling and accuracy through real-world application.
This course is suitable for ages 8 and up and is ideal for new shooters as well as those seeking a structured refresher on rifle safety and fundamentals.
