Intro to Defensive Carbine is an introductory level course for carbine shooters. This class a one day, low to moderate intensity class with the emphasis on the basics of marksmanship and safe manipulation of the carbine, and is geared for those who have not had any formal instruction. Topics covered include safety, stance, zeroing for iron sights and optics, sight alignment and trigger control. Familiarization with their carbine includes field stripping and maintenance. Other subject matter that is covered includes reloads, presentation, shooting positions, and introduction to different skill drills including dry fire.

This class will include:

  • Nomenclature
  • Proper lubrication
  • Slings
  • Stance
  • Steady hold factors
  • Steps to firing the shot

Practical application will include:

  • Carbine safety
  • Sight alignment / sight picture
  • Mounting the carbine, trigger control
  • Load / unload / reloading
  • Malfunction clearance.
  • Position shooting - Standing.
  • Particular emphasis will be placed at understanding ballistics, including mechanical offset.
  • All firing will be done from static lines into the backstop. There will be no shooting and moving in this class.
  • Drills with multiple repetitions at varying distances from 5-50 yards on carbine mounts with 1, 2, and 3 shot drills, with reload/malfunction clearance as needed.

Bring to Class:

  • A good attitude
  • Serviceable 5.56x45mm Carbine (16" barrel or less). An AR type is strongly recommended and will be the platform covered. But other battle rifle platforms are acceptable as large as .308 and as small as .22 LR
  • An adjustable stock is recommended - an A2 style stock will work, but will compromise positions.
  • A Serviceable sling. Single point or two point tactical slings are best but you must have a sling. NO EXCEPTIONS CAN BE MADE!
  • A red dot or other optic is optional, but recommended.
  • At least 3 Serviceable magazines - 30 round preferably.
  • The ability to carry at least two magazines on your body.
  • Ear and eye protection
  • Baseball hat is recommended
  • Clothing and footwear appropriate for the season and weather conditions (this class goes on rain or shine)
  • Shooting gloves are optional, but recommended.
  • Water / electrolyte replacement and food. We will break for lunch but you will be on your own for food
  • 300 rounds of ammo (we will be shooting approx. 250-300 rounds).  A magazine loader such as a "Lula" can help save your thumbs

Before class:

  • Tighten and Loctite any optics or items that are not permanently mounted to your rifle.
  • Mark your magazines so you know which ones are yours.
